Thanks in part to a $500,000 donation from  FRVI members,  a Crisis Stabilization Unit opened in Aurora

A Crisis Stabilization Unit opened at Ascension Mercy hospital / medical center in  Aurora on March 1, thanks in part to a $500,000 donation from  Fox River Valley Initiative (FRVI.) members. The opening of this facility is a crucial piece in decriminalizing mental illness along with training for law enforcement and affordable housing.

The Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) staff is trained in dealing with mental health. Most people in a mental health crisis just need a cooling off time in a calming environment or to get back on their prescriptions. The staff has immediate access to medication for those who are simply off their meds.  A person in a crisis needing medical attention as well can go to the Emergency Room first and then the CSU. Patients can self-admit, be brought to the CSU by family or friends, or by law enforcement. The CSU is open 24 /7, located next to the newly refurbished Emergency Department. This Unit is the important alternative to long waits in Emergency Departments while medical patients are triaged ahead of patients in a mental health crisis or jail.

The Justice and Witness ministry at the Congregational Church of Batavia carries out the action part of the ministry through the Fox River Valley Initiative (FRVI). FRVI partnered with sister organizations in the Chicago metro area and elected officials as well as several States Attorney offices over a five year period to secure the funding to make Crisis Stabilization Units viable in Illinois.
